Tastes Like: asian ingredients inspired dessert.  depending on what you get, you will either love it or hate it.  I am not so fond of the Yuzu Eskimo (seasonal dessert).  I found all the textures and flavors to be too light for my palate.  Rasberry sauce to thin and little to enjoy gave a tartness sweet, tiny little chocolate crunches that seem to dissipate within a moment’s notice.  Everything just lacked depth and fell flat with very little surprise.  I am, however, a BIG fan of the chocolate coconut cookie.  I have it warmed up every time.  The center is rich, gooey with a touch of coconut that is surprisingly fitting.  I always have fun when dining in here.  I have not tried their cupcakes yet … but I haven’t been back here for a while.  Their desserts are seasonal updated, so it’s time for a visit.

Ambiance: Dimly lit, pretty, fun & casual, almost sensual.  An atmosphere you definitely want to get with your loved ones & friends for some coffee and dessert.

Service: Young lively & fun waiters but sometimes slow.  They can take a long time to take your order and serve you.  The good part is …that you can stay there longer unnoticed.  (Unless of course there is a party waiting for a table).

Caveat: Cash Only

Tastes Like: the next best thing for soybean and tofu desserts.  delicate, while rich. light. surprisingly easy and clean on the palate.  i tried the black sesame sweet tofu dessert and sweet potato cake.  the sweet tofu was soft, delicately layered and served with a side of  kuromitsu syrup, which is a Japanese version of sugar/simple syrup  (literal translation black honey), so you can easily adjust the level of sweetness.  it was good if you like a clean, light dessert.  the black sesame gives it an extra nutty taste and the seeds are finely grinded up, so the texture is still smooth.  i liked the sweet potato cake more.  reminds me of bread pudding with all the fun fixins of pecans and ice cream.  plus the drizzle caramel on top and it comes out warm.  It’s fabulous …and would highly recommend for those that enjoy bread pudding!

Ambiance: Whimsical yet playful.  A few tables in the back, otherwise, you can enjoy the bar seats with a view of 9th ave. Kitchen is wide open so you can take a look at what the Chef is whipping up, if you’re sitting up front.

Service: Waitstaff was courtesy & most helpful.

chikalicious

Tastes Like: I was not a fan of the main dessert that I had… the chocolate cake was a bit too dry and though the peppercorn ice cream was interesting…. left something to be desired. I thoroughly enjoyed the sweet lavender…and coconut miniature truffle thingymajig.

Ambiance: Uber trendy and clean… Bar seating is a must to truly enjoy the whole experience.

Service: Fancy. Just a tad bit slow due to Chika’s precise and attentive care… I didn’t mind at all. I loved watching her work her magic little fingers.

Caveat: $15 prix fixe with an optional wine pairing.  A steep price to pay for dessert itself, but you’re really paying for the ambiance and “finissimo” dessert experience.  I think it’s definitely worth a visit if you are a true dessert person.

cha-anblacksesame

Tastes Like: heaven concatenated with black sesame as the main weapon of ingredient, which is my weakness indeed.  Black sesame crème brulee, consisting of the black sesame “chip’, black sesame ice cream & the whipped crème brulee sitting at the fruitful bottom, in part to its whole, a perfect ensemble to represent a truly sublime Japanese dessert. Words cannot describe the joys and struggles to contain myself from further damage.  I succumb to easy peer pressure…. As the last few bites remain the crème brulee (my least favorite, but still desirous in conjunction with its other components).  What now, you say? I have to try others?  There could be no other dessert when I come here.

Ambiance: Moderate, low key, quite relaxed & quiet underneath the threshold.

Service: We weren’t kidding when we took our time…they weren’t kidding either.

Rating: 5 stars

Caveat: It should come as no surprise, cash only!  Same owners of Soba-ya, Otafuku, Sakagura, Rairai Ken, Shabu Tatsu, Sushi Choshi, Hasaki, Sakebar Decibel..so next time you hesitate, think about the other restaurants it manages!  I’ve been to 5 out of the 9 properties they own..and now I can’t wait to check out Rairai Ken & Shabu Tatsu!

Nutella w/ strawberries & bananas

Grand Marnier, belgian chocolate & strawberries

Grand Marnier, belgian chocolate & strawberries

Tastes Like: lovely, moist, delicate crepes.  done right.  whether you lavish with Grand Marnier, belgian chocolate w/ strawberries or keep it low with nutella and bananas, there is surely something for your sweet palate.  There are savory crepes if your partner or significant other is pouting.  My fave is the Grand Marnier….light it up on fire and ready to go!

Ambiance: Low key vibe, eccentric, hip neighborhood vibe.  Absolutely no frills.

Service: They were awesome.  Never felt pressured to leave, we were absolutely relaxed.  They also have very late night hours.
