Mood: noodles.  soup!

Tastes Like: airy, light broth… half way there into making pho broth but somehow incomplete. broth was lacking both depth and flavor.  the duck is my favorite choice here so far. fatty, tender and delicious duck.  the noodles were equally as good. hand pulled and organic, made fresh to order.  the broth ruined the entire experience, but the noodles are so good, it makes me come back on occasion.

Must Haves: duck noodle soup

Stay Away: n/a

Ambiance: always busy and bustling.  lively but still quaint.

Mood: This is simply a “to-go” stall.  If you’re in Flushing & the mood for cheap duck buns, GO HERE.

Tastes Like: mini delicious treats!  Savory, salty duck with a touch of sweet hoisin sauce.  Combining all ingredients in a warm steam bun topped with sliced green onions.  Heaven of the stars.  You can probably down it in 3 quick bites.  Do yourself a favor, and get more than 1.  For a buck a piece, I’d say it’s a bargain…so don’t go complaining about how little meat, too much sauce there is.  It can’t get any better than this.  And of course prices have gone up, so has everything else.  These are the times….

Must Haves: DUCK BUNS!

Stay Away: NA

Ambiance: Highly unmarked & un-noticed stall off the main strip of downtown flushing.  i’m not even sure I have the name of this place correct.

Service: Efficiency is key.  Quick just about every time… you take your buns to go.

Rating: 5 stars

Caveat: Cash only.  Of course.

Mood: Noodles….hot, stir fried or soup noodles… they have a great selection.  Great lunch spot as well.

Tastes Like: it will hit the spot for lunch…not so much for dinner.  I don’t know how I feel about Asian Fusion, but judging from the menu, it’s more korean dishes or chinese.  Take your pick.  I opted for a Korean combo of cold black bean noodles (jja jang noodles) and seafood noodle soup (jampong).  For $10, it’s a heaping amount of food that satiates both hot & cold.  We ordered some Chinese steamed white buns as apps, and they were gigantic.  They were decent enough, so no further complaints necessary.

Must Haves: Check out their $10 lunch specials.  Their food is OK, so nothing to rant must haves on.

Stay Away: NA

Ambiance: Definitely more Chinese restaurant style than Korean.  Whatever that can possibly mean.  Let’s just say I’m glad they tidied up the place.

Service: Took a little bit to order, but once we got past that hurdle, all was quick & attentive.  I guess you have to be during busy lunch service right?

Rating: 2.5 stars

Caveat: Obviously, this review is strictly for lunch only.  Dinner menu looks a bit pricey…but maybe decent at best.

Mood: Chinese food, like dim sum.  Soup IN the dumplings.  Unheard concept? It’s time to try some soup dumplings.

Tastes Like: Soup dumplings….no, not dumpling soup. Soup IN the dumplings.  I know, I was dumbfounded at first…and grew quite fond of the infamous Shanghai tradition after learning the secret to how these little gems are made.  Cheers to a simple homage yet sublime little soup dumplings!  Your choice of pork or crab.  I can’t eat too much of these, cuz’ after a while, I just feel like I’m pouring fat into my mouth, or that is what the texture of the broth feels like to me.  Good, nonetheless, but tiring after a few bites.  They have great side dishes here as well.. try the shanghai noodles, which has a soft chewy bite.  Tasty when sizzling hot.  Some other noteworthy dishes are the tofu with crabmeat on top.  A bit on the greasy side though.

Must Haves: aside from the soup dumplings try the shanghai stir fry noodles. chewy like udon consistency spread with a thick sauce.

Stay Away: lotus buns are greasy and not so flavorful here.

Ambiance: Busy in the heart of Chinatown.  Not much to see, but you can appreciate the hustling flow.  With its first opening in Flushing of 1995, this place is truly epic.  If you are a tourist, this place is a must stop and try on your list of traps.

Service: They are all over the place.  Ready and ready to take your order, but sometimes forget to take your drink order!

Rating: 3 stars

Caveat: Cash only.  If you are in a small crowd, be prepared to sit with another small crowd in a big table.  It’s THAT busy… so be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes on a given weekend.  There are 3 locations in NYC, hands down the best is located, no other than good ole’ Chinatown
